Pierre Désiré Eugène Franc Lamy came from a family of glass painters . He only adopted his stage name Franc-Lamy later. He began his training at the municipal drawing school in the 9th arrondissement in Paris and from 1872 became a student of the painter Isidore Pils , where Norbert Goeneutte and Frédéric Samuel Cordey were among his classmates. From 1873 he studied at the École des beaux-arts . After the death of Pils, he first visited Henri Lehmann's studio in 1875 and then switched to Jean-Léon Gérôme . Franc-Lamy frequented the literary circles of the Café de la Nouvelle Athènes , where he met poets such as Léon Dierx , Auguste de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam , Maurice Rollinat and Stéphane Mallarmé . Franc-Lamy created illustrations for various scores for the musician Ernest Cabaner . Cabaner introduced Franc-Lamy to the drawing room of Nina de Callias , who afterwards was his lover for some time. Franc-Lamy was friends with Pierre-Auguste Renoir , whom he modeled several times. For example, he can be seen in the painting Bal du moulin de la Galette from 1876. Renoir also invited Franc-Lamy to the 3rd group exhibition of the Impressionists in 1877 .

Franc-Lamy's early work is influenced by Renoir's Impressionist painting style. From 1880 he exhibited regularly in the salon of the Société des Artistes Français . His subjects were often landscapes, including subjects from his trips to Venice and Bruges . In addition, he combined landscape images with the representation of female nudes. In addition, he created portraits and genre paintings. He showed his works at the Paris World Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900 and received awards there. In 1892 he was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor , and in 1914 he was made an officer.
