Bal du moulin de la Galette is a painting by the French painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir from 1876 . It is 131 × 175 cm and hangs in the Musée d'Orsay .

The picture shows an outdoor scene with people dancing and having fun in Montmartre . The rendering of the light makes the scene (typical of Renoir and Impressionism ) alive and spontaneous.

It comes from the Gustave Caillebotte collection .

Auction record

A smaller version (78 × 114 cm) of the same motif was sold to Japanese entrepreneur Saitō Ryōei on May 17, 1990 for $ 78.1 million at Sotheby’s in New York City . After his death, the painting was sold to an anonymous buyer in 1997 for $ 50 million. It is one of the 20 most expensive paintings that have ever been sold (as of October 2016).
