Tommy Sjödin (born August 13, 1965 in Sundsvall ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach and functionary who has been under contract as head coach at Brynäs IF in the Svenska Hockeyligan since 2017 . In his active time he played from 1983 to 2008 for the Minnesota North Stars , Dallas Stars and Nordiques de Québec in the National Hockey League .

Career

Tommy Sjödin began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth department of Timrå IK , for whose professional team he was active from 1983 to 1986 in Division 1 , the second highest division in Sweden at the time. The defender then moved to Brynäs IF , for which he appeared in the Elitserien over the next six years . In the 1991/92 season he was awarded the guldpucken as player of the year in Sweden. He then joined the Minnesota North Stars , who had selected him in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft in the twelfth round as a total of 237th player. With the North Stars he was a regular player in the National Hockey League in the 1992/93 season and scored 36 scorer points in his rookie year in the NHL 77 games, including seven goals. After the team was relocated for the 1993/94 season , he only appeared seven times for their successor team Dallas Stars in the NHL, while he was mostly on the ice for their farm team Kalamazoo Wings in the American Hockey League . He finally ended the season with the Nordiques de Québec in the NHL.

From 1994 to 1998 Sjödin played for HC Lugano in the Swiss National League A . At the same time, he ended the 1996/97 season at HC Bozen from the Italian A1 series , with which he immediately won the national championship title. For the 1998/99 season he moved within the NLA to the Kloten Flyers . The veteran returned to the Brynäs IF in the Elitserien. At Brynäs he was assistant captain for four years and then team captain for five years, before ending his active career in 2008 at the age of 43.

International

For Sweden Sjödin took part in the World Championships in 1992 , 1994 , 1995 and 1996 . He was also in his country's squad at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . At the 1992 World Cup he and his team won the gold medal, the bronze at the 1994 World Cup and the silver medal at the 1995 World Cup. At the 1995 World Cup, he was also elected to the tournament's All-Star Team.

Trainer

In the 2009/10 season Sjödin worked as an assistant coach for his home club Brynäs IF. In the following year he was the head coach of the U18 juniors of Valbo HC , where he worked as head coach and general manager from 2011 onwards. Already in his first year he led the team from fourth class Division 2 to third class Division 1, but rose again the following year. From the 2015/16 season Sjödin was again employed as an assistant coach at Brynäs IF in the Svenska Hockeyligan . In the middle of the 2017/18 season he was promoted to head coach.
