Jamie Schaafsma (born February 11, 1983 in Chatham , Ontario ) is a Dutch - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL since 2015 .

Career

Jamie Schaafsma, who was born to parents of Dutch origin in the Canadian province of Ontario , began his career as a hockey player with the Chatham Kent Cyclones youth team in his hometown. Later he was with the Petrolia Jets and the Tecumseh Chiefs , who are also active in regional leagues in Ontario, on the ice. In 2004 he moved to the home of his ancestors, where he first played for two years for the Eaters Geleen and then for one year with the Amstel Tijgers Amsterdam in the honor division . With the Tijgers, he won the Dutch ice hockey cup in 2007 . He then moved to SHC Fassa in the Italian Serie A1 , in which he contributed as the fifth best scorer in the league to the good performance of the team from Canazei , which reached the playoff semi-finals. Nevertheless, he left the club and joined the Fischtown Pinguins from Bremerhaven , who played in the second Bundesliga . But already in December 2008 he returned to Italy, where he finished the season for the reigning champions HC Bozen and not only defended the championship title with the South Tyroleans , but also won the cup competition . After this success he first returned to North America, where he was on the ice for the Flint Generals in the International Hockey League . With the team from Michigan he reached the final of the Turner Cup , which was lost against the Fort Wayne Komets with 1: 4 wins. When the team and league were subsequently dissolved, he moved again to Italy, where he played in the second-class A2 series with HC Gherdëina from Val Gardena until 2012 . After the promotion to the A1 series failed twice, he finally returned to North America and played for the Allen Americans for three years . With the Texans, he first won the Ray Miron President's Cup of the Central Hockey League in 2013 and 2014 . In April 2013, he completed his only game on loan in the American Hockey League for the Houston Eros . After the league was dissolved in 2014, he moved with his team to the ECHL , where the Kelly Cup was won straight away in 2015 . He then moved to league rivals Fort Wayne Komets, where he - as in his last year with the Allen Americans - acts as team captain.

International

Schaafsma played for the Netherlands at the World Championships in Division I in 2007 , 2008 , 2009 and 2011 . In addition, Schaafsma took part with the Dutch team in the qualifying tournament for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games , but the Dutch could not qualify.
