Paul Philipp "Phil" Groenveld (born September 18, 1974 in Oshawa , Ontario ) is a former Canadian - Dutch ice hockey goalkeeper who became French , Dutch and Italian champions over the course of his career . Internationally he played for the Netherlands .
Career
Club
Phil Groeneveld, who was born as a descendant of Dutch immigrants in Canada, was drawn in the 1992 OHL Priority Selection by the Peterborough Petes in the 13th round as the 208th player. He played in 1993/94 for the Ohio State Buckeyes , the team from Ohio State University and played after a change of university in 1994/95 for the team at Augustana University College in Canada. After a year in the Central Hockey League , he moved to Europe in 1996, where he first played for six years in the top French league (then called Nationale 1A and Elite Ligue one after the other ). After two years with Viry-Châtillon Essonne Hockey , he moved to Rouen Hockey Elite 76 in 1998 and won the French championship in 2001 and the national cup competition in 2002 with the Normandy team . In 2001 he was also honored with the trophy Jean Ferrand as the best goalkeeper in the league.
In the 2002/03 season he moved to the country of his forefathers and played there for the Boretti Tigers Amsterdam in the honor division . This year he was able to win both the Dutch championship title and the cup competition and was awarded the Gobel-De Bruyn-Trofee as the best goalkeeper in the honor division. As a result, Groeneveld did not stay with any club for more than a year straight and played for various teams from Canada and Italy until his retirement in 2011. He won both the Italian championship title and the Supercoppa with HC Bozen in the 2007/08 season .
National team
Groeneveld participated for the Netherlands in the World Ice Hockey Championships for men in 2005 , when he was voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament, in 2006 , 2007 , when he again became the best goalkeeper of the with the third best catch rate after the French Fabrice Lhenry and the Poland Arkadiusz Sobecki Tournament was chosen in 2008 , when it had the third best catch quota after the British Stephen Murphy and the Kazakhs Sergei Ogureshnikov , 2009 , 2010 and 2011 in Division I respectively. He also represented his colors at the qualifying tournaments for the Winter Olympics in Turin in 2006 and in Vancouver in 2010 .
