The all-German team took part in the 1960 Winter Olympics in the US Squaw Valley with a delegation of 74 athletes, consisting of athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic .

The starting positions of the 56 men and 18 women were awarded through direct nominations by top athletes, by means of quotas and through qualifying competitions between East and West German athletes. In the end, 31 athletes from 10 GDR clubs and 43 athletes from clubs in the Federal Republic of Germany took part.

After 1956 it was the second participation of an all-German team in the Olympic Winter Games .

Flag bearer

The ski jumper Helmut Recknagel carried the flag of Germany during the opening ceremony in the Blyth Arena .

Medals

With four won gold, three silver and one bronze medal, the German team took 2nd place in the medals table .

biathlon

At the Olympic premiere of the biathlon, poor shooting results prevented better placements for the German athletes, all of whom came from Oberhof. Cuno Werner, who also competes in cross-country skiing, came in ninth after 20 km, with eight shooting errors preventing an even better placement. Herbert Kirchner was given the starting number 1 and was the first ever Olympic biathlete to start.

ice Hockey

In the pre-Olympic internal German qualification in December 1959, the BRD representation prevailed. In the first leg in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the West German players won 5-2. In the second leg in the ice hockey stronghold of Weißwasser, the GDR representation initially took the lead 3: 2 in the second period, but lost in the end with 3: 5. Thus, the FRG selection represented Germany in Squaw Valley. The team qualified for the final round and finished sixth among nine participating teams in the final accounts.

The reigning European champions Kilius / Bäumler won silver in pair skating. The Olympic champion from 1964, Manfred Schnelldorfer, came in eighth place at his Olympic premiere among the men. Only Bodo Bockenauer from Berlin was able to qualify for the Olympics from the GDR side in the domestic elimination bouts.

Speed ​​skating

At the Olympic premiere in women's speed skating, Berlin-based Helga Haase caused a bang. Previously not well represented internationally, in her race she improved the Olympic record over 500 meters that had just been set by a tenth of a second and won gold. This was the first Olympic gold medal at winter games for GDR athletes. Over 1000 meters, Haase asserted himself in the field of the Soviet medal favorites and won silver again, only two tenths of a second behind gold. Helga Haase thus advanced to become the most successful German athlete at the Games. Her success is all the more important because her husband and trainer were refused entry to the USA and Helga Haase had to walk without support. Your teammates, all of whom also came from the GDR, did not take any top positions.
In the men’s race, only the Berlin Kuhnert managed a remarkable ninth place over 1500 meters. Of the seven starters, five men came from the GDR.

Nordic combination

The Hinterzartener Georg Thoma, reigning German champion, but not yet appeared internationally, beat the favorites from Norway and Finland somewhat surprisingly. Thoma won the jumping and was able to defend first place with the fourth fastest time. Thomas' teammates from Klingenthal fell behind in the running decision after some strong jumps.

Alpine skiing

The purely West German women's team celebrated an Olympic victory in the downhill and a bronze medal in the slalom.
Hans Peter Lanig won silver in the downhill, Luggi Leitner missed bronze in the slalom by just a tenth of a second. The only East German starter Eberhard Riedel was only used in the downhill at his first Winter Olympics. There he reached a respectable 16th place among over 60 starters.

Cross-country skiing

Nine athletes from the 14-strong cross-country skiing team came from East Germany and five from West Germany. In the individual decisions, only Rita Czech-Blasel was able to attract attention over 10 kilometers with twelfth place. She was the second best Central European on this route. In the relay decisions, the women took fifth place, the men ninth.

Ski jumping

The composition of the ski jumping team brought together top class ski jumping and political explosiveness. For the Four Hills Tournament 1959/1960, the GDR team around the two-time tournament winner Helmut Recknagel was refused entry to the FRG. In his absence, the FRG representative Max Bolkart won the tour. The newly crowned tour winner and his competitor Recknagel now traveled to Squaw Valley as teammates. In the only competition on the normal hill, Recknagel won gold with the best distance in both rounds. Bolkart came in sixth. Recknagel was the first jumper outside Scandinavia to become Olympic champion.
