Hanspeter Lanig ( December 7, 1935 in HindelangJanuary 28, 2022 in Hindelang ) was a German alpine skier . Lanig was German champion seven times . At the 1960 Winter Olympics , he won the silver medal in the downhill.

career

Like his sister Evi , Hanspeter Lanig was one of the best skiers in the German Ski Association in the 1950s . He won his first German championship title in 1954. Two years later he took part in the Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo for the first time . Despite a fall, he finished fifth in downhill and seventh in giant slalom .

The greatest success of his career came at the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics . Lanig won the silver medal in the downhill , five tenths behind the Frenchman Jean Vuarnet . In the combination , which counts only for the world championship , he was third. In the same year, Federal President Heinrich Lübke awarded him the Silver Laurel Leaf for his successes .

After the games ended, Lanig stayed in the United States to work in hotels. From 1962 to 1966 he was coach of the German national ski team. In the mid-1960s he took over his parents' café in Oberjoch . In the years that followed, he converted it into a sports hotel and also took over the management of the local ski school.

His brother Axel Lanig and his sister Evi Lanig were also among the top German ski racers, brother-in-law Lorenz Nieberl was a bobsledder and his son Peter Lanig was a freestyle skier.

Lanig had been married to the Swiss journalist and former ski racer Silvia Lanig-Gnehm since 1966. They had two children together.

Lanig died on January 28, 2022 in Oberjoch at the age of 86.
