Fritz Wagnerberger (born June 14, 1937 in Traunstein ; † March 23, 2010 ) was a German ski racer and sports official . He was a five-time German champion , celebrated several victories in international races and took part in four world championships and the Olympic Winter Games. From 1970 to 1978 and from 1994 to 2005 he was President of the German Ski Association (DSV) for 19 years .

biography

During his time as an active ski racer, Wagnerberger celebrated numerous national and international successes. From 1956 to 1964, the ESV Traunstein athlete was three times German champion in downhill skiing and twice in giant slalom. He took part in two world championships and twice in the Olympic Winter Games , which at that time also counted as world championships. At the 1958 World Championships in Bad Gastein he was eleventh in slalom and in giant slalom, but retired in the downhill. Four years later, he achieved 14th place in the downhill at the 1962 World Championships in Chamonix , but did not finish in the giant slalom. At the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , he achieved 15th place in the giant slalom and twelfth place in the downhill at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . In 1961, Wagnerberger won the downhill of the Arlberg-Kandahar race in Mürren at the same time as the Italian Bruno Alberti . He achieved two victories at the International Adelboden Ski Days on Chuenisbärgli : in 1959 he won the giant slalom and in 1961 the slalom. In January 1960 he achieved second place in the giant slalom at the 21st Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel at the same time as his compatriot Hans-Peter Lanig, and in March of the same year he came second in the combination of the Harriman Cup in Sun Valley .

After his active career, Wagnerberger became involved in the German Ski Association . He was sports director and from 1970 to 1978 and from 1994 to 2005 he was president of the DSV for a total of 19 years and from 1978 to 1990 its vice-president. During this time he was significantly involved in the development of the German Ski Association. In 2005, Wagnerberger was made honorary president of the DSV - an award no one had ever received before. Wagnerberger was also involved in the International Ski Federation (FIS). He had been a council member of the FIS since 1971 and chairman of the Marc Hodler Foundation. From 1973 to 2006 he was Vice President of the National Olympic Committee and from 1999 to 2005 a board member of the German Sports Aid Foundation . For his services he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class .
