The founder and builder of today's Swedish railway line Nässjö – Oskarshamn was the private company Nässjö-Oskarshamns Järnväg (NOJ) . The route is 148 kilometers long. The section between Nässjö and Hultsfred is also called Bockabanan .

history

In 1869, the Nässjö-Oskarshamns Järnväg railway company received the concession to build the line. The section between Berga and Oskarshamn was put into operation in 1871. The section Nässjö - Eksjö followed from 1872 to 1873 , and the entire route was used in 1874.

Combined rail / ship tickets to Borgholm on Öland were already being sold during the NOJ era . In 1946 the line was nationalized in Sweden as part of the general nationalization of the railways and integrated into the SJ network. During this time, the “Gotlander” multiple unit drove the entire route from Nässjö to the quay in Oskarshamn, so that it was easy to change to the Gotland ferry.

Passenger traffic was mainly carried out with rail buses and railcars . The SJ began in 1946 through speed railcars on the route Halmstad a -Nässjö-Oskarshamn. These had been ordered for Halmstad-Nässjö Järnvägar , which was nationalized at the same time as the NOJ. In the 1950s, the railcars took over the type Y6 and in the 1980s, the Fiat railcars Y1 passenger. The garrison town of Eksjö was mainly used for goods transport during World War II . After the route was taken over by the SJ, freight trains were still transported by steam locomotives for some time. However, these were replaced by T43 diesel locomotives in the early 1960s . Green Cargo operates the low freight traffic between Berga and Oskarshamn with diesel locomotives of the type T44 from Hultsfred .

In 1990 the line became part of Småländska järnvägsnät , and transport companies in Jönköping and Kalmar jointly took over the passenger transport. The railcars were provided by BK Tåg for four years . In 1994, passenger traffic on the route changed again. From Banverket , the 148-kilometer route was divided into the sections Nässjö – Hultsfred (Bockabanan), Hultsfred – Berga ( Stångådalsbanan ) and Berga – Oskarshamn according to the new traffic conditions . Most trains from Nässjö went to Hultsfred, while Oskarshamn was connected by direct trains from Linköping. In 1997 operations started on the new Stångådalsbanan. As a result, the train operation on the old route was deteriorated further, it mostly had to be changed in Hultsfred and Berga to get from Nässjö to Oskarshamn. There were mostly bus connections from Berga to Oskarshamn. In April 2005, BK Tåg went bankrupt - the route to Oskarshamn was completely converted to bus operation, which is operated by Kalmar Läns Trafik AB .

In 2011 the train service was resumed, but stopped again in 2014 in the Eksjö – Hultsfred section.

Bockabanan

Fairlieloks were used on the route . The name Bockabanan may come from these locomotives, as they were called bockar by the NOJ . A total of nine such locomotives were purchased during the first few years of operation. In 1902 the boiler of the oldest HULTENHEIM locomotive exploded in the locomotive shed in Eksjö.

Train stations

The train station in Oskarshamn, which still exists today, was built in 1906, Eksjö has a station building in the classicist style from 1897.
