Västra stambanan to Stockholm

The Nässjö – Falköping railway is a single-track electrified Swedish railway that runs 112 km from Nässjö via Jönköping to Falköping . It is part of the railway line from Malmö via Nässjö to Falköping, which represents the historic Södra stambanan . Since the renaming of the Swedish railway lines by Banverket in 1990, the line has been referred to with the art term Jönköpingsbanan .

history

Nässjö train station

The Falköping – Nässjö connection is part of the historic Södra stambana , which branched off from the Västra stambana in Falköping and led to Malmö . The railway was therefore built at the same time as the Västra stambana. The first part, Falköping - Mullsjö , was opened together with the Västra stambana in November 1862. Two years later the last section was completed and the then Södra stambana Falköping – Malmö was inaugurated. When the connection Nässjö – Katrineholm was completed in 1874 , and the trains from Malmö to Stockholm were now guided over this route, the Falköping – Nässjö railway line lost its importance. The railway was now primarily seen as a connection between the Västra and the (new) Södra stambana.

Vättertåg

Until the end of 2010, trains ran from Skövde via Falköping to Nässjö under the brand name Vättertågen , named after the lake Vättern , which the train runs along.

Current operation

Since December 2010, trains running under the Västtåg brand have been running on the entire route on behalf of Västtrafik . They operate on the routes Skövde – Falköping – Jönköping – Nässjö and Göteborg –Falköping – Jönköping – Nässjö. Taken together, on the Falköping – Jönköping – Nässjö route there is approximately one hourly service on weekdays and two-hourly service on weekends. In addition, the Östgötapendeln trains on the Jönköping – Nässjö – MjölbyLinköpingNorrköping route run in time on the Jönköping – Nässjö section . The Jönköping – Nässjö section is used by individual regional regional transport trains ( Krösatåg ).

The only long-distance train on the route is the X2000 , which runs daily except Saturday and Sunday from Stockholm via Nässjö to Jönköping and back.
