Karvia is a municipality with around 2800 inhabitants in western Finland . It is located around 90 km northwest of the port city of Pori in the Satakunta landscape .

location

Karvia lies on the Suomenselkä , an elongated flat ridge that forms the watershed between the Gulf of Bothnia and the Finnish lake area. In Os Kauraharju it reaches a height of 186 m in Karvia. Numerous hills, forests, swamps and lakes shape the landscape of the municipal area and are the habitat of numerous animal species. In the north, Karvia has a share in the Kauhaneva-Pohjankankaan kansallispuisto National Park, founded in 1982 .

local community

The municipality was established in 1865 and includes beside the Kirchdorf Karvia places Alkava, Alkkia, Ämmälä, Kantti, Karviankylä, Kauhakorpi, Mattila, Rannankylä, Sara, Sarvela, Saunaluoma, Suomijärvi and Tuulenkylä. The main employers in the densely populated municipality are the municipal administration, agriculture and forestry and a few small industrial companies.

history

The church village was built in the 17th century as a settlement on Kyrönkankaantie , the medieval traffic and military route between Ilmajoki and Hämeenkyrö . Around 1635 the Swedish army built a first fortification here, on the one hand to secure the road, on the other hand because there was fear of revolts among the numerous Hakkapeliitta who had returned . The fort also played a strategic role in the Russo-Swedish War 1808–1809 ; Bullet holes from the battles from this war can still be seen today in the wooden beams of the fortifications.

coat of arms

Description of the coat of arms : The shield, divided by the cut of a pine tree , blue at the top and gold at the bottom, shows a gold-rimmed pentagon with stylized bastions in the upper half.

The pentagon represents the top view of a schematic military fort (fortress according to Vauban ) and thus refers to history.

Attractions

Karvia Church

The wooden church of Karvia, which is completely painted inside, was built by Salomon Kölström-Köykkä in 1798; the free-standing bell tower in 1806. In the interior of the church there are magnificent wood paintings and an altarpiece by Carl Gabriel Diederichs . On the outer wall in front of the tower is a so-called vaivaisukko , an offering box in the form of a life-size statue of a man who asks for alms for the poor with an outstretched hand. The mild gifts are conveyed through a slit in the wooden beggar's chest. The vaivaisukko (Swedish: Fattiggubbe ) is a form of Finnish folk tradition and can be found in many places, especially in churches in western and south-western Finland (Finnish-Swedish settlement area).
