Life

Lindelöf came from a humble background. He learned Swedish, German and French and studied astronomy and mathematics at the University of Helsinki and, after initially wanting to specialize in astronomy (he was therefore at the Pulkowa Observatory in 1855/56 ), after completing his doctorate from 1857 to 1874, he was professor of mathematics and Rector of Helsinki University from 1869 to 1872. He then turned to politics and was from 1874 to 1902 overseer of the state school system in Finland. He also worked for a life insurance company. In 1883 he was ennobled and in 1886 a State Councilor. He was in the state parliament, in many committees and, from 1900, country marshal.

He published on minimal areas and calculus of variations, differential geometry , mechanics , celestial mechanics and pension funds.

His son Ernst Leonard Lindelöf was also a mathematician.

In 1859 he became a member of the Finnish Academy of Sciences and from 1867 its permanent secretary. He was also a member of the Uppsala Society of Sciences from 1900. In 1880 he received the Steiner Prize from the Berlin Academy of Sciences .
