Selim Gustaf Adolf Palmgren (born February 16, 1878 in Pori , † December 16, 1951 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish composer and pianist .

Life

Palmgren studied from 1895 to 1899 at the Helsinki Conservatory with Henryk Melcer-Szczawiński and Martin Wegelius , then in Berlin and Weimar with Ferruccio Busoni , Conrad Ansorge and Wilhelm Berger . 1906 to 1909 followed by studies in Italy. From 1909 to 1912 he directed the Symphony Orchestra of the Turku Music Society , and then worked as a composer and pianist. He also gave concerts abroad with his wife, the singer Maikki Järnefelt-Palmgren , from 1911 to 1914 in Berlin and northern Germany. After the death of his first wife in 1929, he married her student Minna Talwik.

1921 to 1926 he taught in the USA at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester (New York) . From 1927 he was a teacher for piano and composition at the Helsinki Conservatory, later the Sibelius Academy . From 1939 he held a professorship for composition there. I.a. was Joonas Kokkonen his student. In addition, he took on leading positions in various institutions of Finnish musical life and was also active as a music critic.

Palmgren wrote five piano concertos, which are considered to be his main works (No. 1, op.13 (1903), No. 2 The River , op.33 (1913), No. 3 Metamorphoses , op.41 (1916), No. 4 Huhtikuu (April), op. 85 (1926), No. 5, op. 99 (1941)), orchestral works (including Pictures from Finland, Op. 24 from 1908), about 350 piano pieces (mainly miniatures, some salon-like , which he also Attributes such as “Scandinavian Chopin ” or “Nordic Schumann ” brought in) and the opera Daniel Hjort (premiered in 1910). He also composed more than 200 works for choir (especially for male choir) and songs.

His style is late romantic with impressionistic influences, and also includes Scandinavian folk music in a more stylized, tonal manner.
