Martin Wegelius

Martin Wegelius (born November 10, 1846 in Helsinki , † March 22, 1906 ibid) was a Finnish composer and music teacher .

Life

Wegelius first began to study in Helsinki, but then continued his training in Vienna in 1870 (including with Rudolf Bibl ), shortly afterwards (1871–73) went to Leipzig , where he was taught by Carl Reinecke and others and completed his studies in 1878 Munich from Josef Rheinberger .

Wegelius then worked as Kapellmeister at the Finnish Opera (a division of the Finnish National Theater , 1878/79), as a pianist , accompanist and also as a music critic. In 1882 he founded the Helsinki Music Institute, today's Sibelius Academy , at which Jean Sibelius began to study three years later (Martin Wegelius was his first composition teacher.) His students - he taught music theory and composition - also include Armas Järnefelt , Erkki Melartin , Toivo Kuula and Selim Palmgren .

He wrote several textbooks (including a history of occidental music ), which had numerous editions and were of great importance for music education in Finland up to the Second World War . Wegelius, who was an admirer of Richard Wagner and founded a Wagner Society in 1889, also composed (mainly in the romantic-lyrical idiom), a. a. some choral and orchestral works.
