Alexi Tuomarila

Alexi Tuomarila (born February 27, 1974 in Pori ) is a Finnish jazz pianist .

Tuomarila received classical piano lessons from the age of six to 18. He was initially enthusiastic about rock music before he discovered jazz in his father's record collection . In 1993 he began his studies at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki , which he continued from 1994 to 1999 with Diederik Wissels and Nathalie Loriers at the Brussels Conservatory . During his studies, he met Nicolas Kummert , Christophe Devisscher and Teun Verbruggen, the members of what would later become his quartet, with whom he has performed since 1999 and in the same year won the prize for best band at the international Jazz Hoeilaart competition and the award for best soloist . In 2001 he received first prize at the Monaco Jazz Soloists Competition and shortly afterwards won the Tremplin Competition in Avignon with his quartet . He has released several albums with his quartet, most recently (with Axel Gilain as the new bass player under the new band name Drifter ) Flow (2015).

In 2005 Tuomarila formed a trio with Mats Eilertsen and Olavi Louhivuori , with whom he presented the album Constellations ; The album Seven Hills followed in 2013 and Kingdom in 2017 . Since 2006 he has also worked with Tomasz Stańko ; with his quintet he can be heard on the album Dark Eyes (2009). In 2009 he also played in the quintet Woodoo Allen ; He has also worked with Joey Baron , Kenny Wheeler , Anders Jormin , the Grass Monkeys , Lionel Beuvens, Eero Koivistoinen and Perico Sambeat .
