Olavi Louhivuori (born July 13, 1981 in Jyväskylä ) is a Finnish jazz musician ( drums , composition ).

Live and act

Louhivuori grew up in a musical family; his father is a music professor at Jyväskylä University , his mother a violinist and music teacher. At the age of four he received violin lessons; at the age of eight he switched to the piano and the cello. A little later he decided to play drums and formed his first band together with his classmate Joona Toivanen . During the time at the music boarding school, the Joona Toivanen Trio, which still exists today, was formed in 1997. From 1998 to 2002 he studied at the Finnish Conservatory of Music and then deepened his jazz skills with Jukkis Uotila at the Sibelius Academy . He also studied composition with Sonny Heinilä.

Louhivuori founded the experimental jazz Ensemble Oddarrang in 2003 , with which he released three albums; The group includes the trombonist Ilmari Pohjola, the cellist Osmo Ikonen, the guitarist Lasse Sakara and the bassist Lasse Lindgren. In 2008 Louhivuori presented a first solo album as a percussionist.

He also played in the groups of Alexi Tuomarila , the Ilmiliekki Quartet, the Olavi Trio and Sun . He has also performed with the UMO Jazz Orchestra & Tomasz Stańko ( Dark Eyes ), Jon Balke , Susanne Abbuehl ( The Gift, ), Marilyn Crispell , Teppo Tomb-aho, Jukka Perko and MA Numminen . Between 2000 and 2017 he was involved in 26 recordings in the field of jazz. He can also be heard on recordings by Piirpauke ( Kalabalik , 2006) and Mats Eilertsen ( Radio Yonder , 2009). He is married to the singer Emma Salokoski .

Prizes and awards

As the winner of the Nordic Jazz Comets , he was awarded with the Joona Toivanen Trio in 2000, the Ilmiliekki Quartet in 2002 and Sun in 2006. Oddarrang's debut album Music Illustrated (2006) received a Jazz Emmy in 2006. In 2014 he was “Musician of the Year” at Pori Jazz .
