Jukkis Uotila

Jukkis Uotila (born August 23, 1960 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish jazz drummer.

Live and act

Uotila studied drums, arrangement and composition as well as piano and ensemble playing at the Oulunkya Pop / Jazz Institute from 1972 to 1978. In 1979 he took private lessons in New York from Louis Hayes , Bob Moses , Jeff Brillinger , Dave Samuels and Armen Donelian .

He then led a number of his own small groups that included musicians such as Randy Brecker , Bob Mintzer , Mike Stern , Bob Berg , Wayne Krantz , Anders Jormin , Jim Beard , Jerry Bergonzi , Joey Calderazzo and Lars Danielsson and performed as a freelancer with Randy Brecker and Eliane Elias , Joe Henderson , McCoy Tyner , Benny Goodman , Chet Baker , Freddie Hubbard , Joe Lovano , Jack McDuff , Gil Evans , Maria Schneider and John Scofield .

From 1986 to 1993 he was the drummer of the UMO Jazz Orchestra , which he also conducted in more than twenty projects. Here he worked with guests such as Jim McNeely , Michael Gibbs , Jon Hendricks , Peter Herbolzheimer , Gil Evans, George Gruntz , Herb Pomeroy , George Russell , Anthony Braxton , Martial Solal , Slide Hampton , Palle Mikkelborg , McCoy Tyner , Bob Brookmeyer , Benny Golson , Buddy DeFranco , Flip Phillips , Jimmy Heath , Jens Winther , Tomas Franck , Sam Rivers , Kenny Wheeler , Maria Schneider , Kenny Werner , Dee Dee Bridgewater and Joe Williams together.

He gained further big band experience with the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra, the WDR Big Band Cologne , the Toshiko Akiyoshi / Lew Tabackin Big Band, the Bohuslan Big Band and the Swedish Radio Jazz Group. He has been a member of the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra since 1990, the Norrbotten Big Band since 1993 and the NDR Big Band since 1998. Since 1995 he has also been part of the Toots Thielemans band .

Uotila has been teaching at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki since 1984 . He has headed the jazz department here since 1986 and became Scandinavia's first professor of jazz music in 1994.
