Norrbotten Big Band

The Norrbotten Big Band (NBB) is a Swedish big band . Artistic director is currently (2018) Joakim Milder .

Band history

The band has existed since 1986 and operates out of Luleå . The first artistic director of the big band was the jazz composer Örjan Fahlström (until 1996). His first projects included a work for organ and big band, animations , film music for the silent film Witches (1922) and music for texts from William Shakespeare's Macbeth ( Lesser than Macbeth, and Greater ). From the mid-1990s onwards, Tim Hagans was the artistic director . In collaboration with Tim Hagans, the albums Future North (1998) and Future Miles (2002) were created, which fused big band music with drum and bass and hip-hop across all genres. Box of Cannoli , one of the tracks on their joint album The Avatar Sessions (2009), was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition at the 2011 Grammy Awards .

The Norrbotten Big Band also works with Carla Bley , Randy Brecker , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Kurt Elling , Dave Liebman , Joe Lovano , Chris Potter , Maria Schneider , Toots Thielemans , Olga Konkova and with Django Bates . Further collaborations took place with Swedish musicians such as Magnus Lindgren , Jonas Kullhammar , Nils Landgren , Viktoria Tolstoy , Rigmor Gustafsson , Ann-Sofi Söderqvist , Jeanette Lindström and Josefine Lindstrand and with the piano trio est . In 2000, the orchestra performed various commissioned compositions on Swedish national radio, including Örjan Fahlström's Macbeth adaptation Vägmärken , a composition for voice, trumpet, church organ, chamber choir and big band that was written for Dag Hammarskjöld's centenary , and a composition by Bob Brookmeyer for soprano saxophone and 16 players of the NBB, including Lennart Åberg as soloist . In collaboration with Sveriges Radio , recordings of compositions by the Swedish jazz musicians Jan Johansson , Lars Gullin and Börje Fredriksson were also made .

So far, Håkan Broström , Bengt Ek, Björn Hängsel, Bo Strandberg, Christian Spering, Dan Johansson, Daniel Karlsson, Jan Thelin, Jukkis Uotila , Leif Lindvall, Magnus Ekholm, Magnus Puls, Mats Garberg, PO Svanström, Per Moberg, Peter Dahlgren and Tapio Maunuvaara.
