Örjan Fahlström (born June 21, 1953 in Sandviken ) is a Swedish composer , arranger and jazz musician (vibraphone, marimba, percussion).

Life

Örjan Fahlström grew up in Umeå . He first studied at Framnäs College of Music before he was trained as a composer and conductor at the Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm . He first played in the rock jazz group Kornet before founding the Fahlström International Big Band in 1977 , in which renowned jazz soloists such as Benny Bailey , Bobo Stenson , Tim Hagans and Palle Mikkelborg played. Fahlström was artistic director of the Norrbotten Big Band from 1989 to 1996 . As a composer, vibraphonist and percussionist he was a member of the Swedish Radio Jazz Group . He has also conducted musicals such as Cats , A Chorus Line and Cabaret and wrote his own works in this genre. From 1990 he also worked regularly as a guest conductor with the NDR Bigband , the Estonian Dream Big Band Tallinn and other big bands in the Scandinavian region. He also conducted symphony concerts. He also wrote film scores .

In 2005 Fahlström was appointed professor of composition at the Kungliga Musikhögskolan i Stockholm (Royal College of Music), where he was head of the composition and conducting department.

He was associated with the hr big band for several years as a guest conductor and composer. From 2008 to 2011 he led the hr big band .
