Ann-Sofi Söderqvist

Ann-Sofi Söderqvist (born December 28, 1956 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish jazz musician ( trumpet , flugelhorn ) who has emerged primarily as a composer .

Live and act

Söderqvist learned cornet at the municipal music school at the age of nine ; the school's wind orchestra sparked her interest in jazz. In 1977/78 she completed the music program at the Birkagärden Adult Education Center. From 1978 to 1984 she played in the salsa band Hot Salsa ; In 1979 she met the pianist Stefan Forssén and was a member of his sextet Änglaspel until 1985 , with whom she toured extensively. When the band from Concerts Sweden was named "Jazz Group of the Year" in 1982, they recorded an album. Then Söderqvist belonged to the big band Stora Stygga for 13 years , which performed under the direction of Mats Holmquist at the North Sea Jazz Festival , the Pori Jazz Festivaland the Stockholm Jazz & Blues Festival and released several albums.

From 1985 to 1989 she studied at the Royal Swedish Music Academy under Claes Strömblad and Bengt-Arne Wallin . She led her own groups, but also worked with various Swedish big bands such as those of Bernt Rosengren and Gugge Hedrenius, the Norrbotten Big Band , Bohuslän Big Band, or the Ahmadu Jarr Highlife Band. She also recorded with Jan Wallgren and Lina Nyberg and supported Björn J: son Lindh , Peter LeMarc, Peter Gullin, Cyndee Peter as well as Imperiet, Ladies & Gentlemen, Blue Cluster, Shine, Clues & Q: s .

Söderqvist has been teaching composition, arrangement and ensemble management as an adjunct at the Royal Music Academy since 2006 . In 2009 she was appointed musical director of the international composition competition Jazzverk . In 2014 she led the European Jazz Orchestra .

Prizes and awards

Söderqvist received a scholarship from the City of Stockholm in 1985 and was awarded the Casper Prize by Dagens Nyheter in 1988 . In 2008 she received a Jazzkannan and in 2010 the Jan Johansson Award . In 2011 she was named composer of the year by Jazzkatten. In 2013 she was awarded the Medal of the Swedish Academy of Music and in 2019 the Lars Gullin Prize .
