It was originally called the Stockholm Jazz and Blues Festival, later the Stockholm Jazz Festival. One of the main venues was the port district with the island of Skeppsholmen , and accordingly there was a festival pass. Since 2012, the concerts in the city find in the door instead, especially in Konserthusert, Kulturhuset and the Fasching Jazz Club. In addition to jazz, other musical styles such as rock and blues are also represented. It works with the Ystad Jazz Festival in early August and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival - which takes place in July - and is supported by the city.

Musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie , Gerry Mulligan , Pharoah Sanders , Stan Getz , Ray Brown , Benny Carter and James Moody performed at the first festival in 1980, and from the Scandinavian side Arne Domnérus , Svend Asmussen , Christer Boustedt and Georg Riedel .

Over the next few years, Count Basie (1985) and Chet Baker (1983, 1985) performed at and outside Jazz BB King , Joan Armatrading , Lauryn Hill and Van Morrison (1990, 2004). From Sweden, the Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Nils Landgren Funk Unit, Peps Persson , Lisa Ekdahl , Monica Zetterlund and Viktoria Tolstoy played there .

In 2013 the festival takes place in October; Performances by Carla Bley , Cassandra Wilson with Harriet Tubman , Cindy Blackman , Lina Nyrberg with the Norrbotten Big Band and Avishai Cohen are planned .

In the Jazzathon , an uninterrupted jam session with over a hundred musicians takes place over five days in the Clarion Hotel, in free improvisation. It started in 2008 as an attempt to break the world record.
