Emma Salokoski (born October 28, 1976 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish-Swedish singer, composer and songwriter.

Life

Emma Salokoski was born in Helsinki in 1976. Because her mother was Finnish Swedish, Emma grew up bilingual. Salokoski has two brothers. When she was three years old, her family moved to Moscow , where her father worked as a bank clerk. Three years later the family moved back to Finland. Salokoski went to a Swedish-language school up to the ninth grade, after which she switched to the Sibelius-lukio (music high school).

Emma Salokoski is married to the jazz drummer Olavi Louhivuori . The couple has a son.

Musical career

Salokoski received violin lessons at the age of eleven, but quickly switched to the viola and concentrated on singing at the Sibelius-lukio. After graduating from high school, she studied music theater at the Stockholm Art School Kulturama. There she graduated in 1998 and worked for a year in the theater of Tampere ( Tampereen Teatteri ) in the musical Rent and in the theater of Helsinki ( Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri ) in the musical Les Misérables . She then studied at the Helsingin Pop & Jazz Conservatory. In 2001 she switched to the jazz department at Sibelius-Akatemia . Salokoski dropped out of both courses in order to concentrate more on the band Emma Salokoski Ensemble . Years later Salokoski completed a three-year course to become a singer and singing teacher at the Complete Vocal Technique Institute in Copenhagen .

In 2007 she won the prize for best soloist at the Emma Gala in Finland . In 2010 she took part in the casting show Kuorosota ( Choral War ) with a choir group from Helsinki . She is currently working as a CVT ( Complete Vocal Technique ) teacher in Helsinki.

Ensembles

Emma Salokoski Ensemble

The Emma Salokoski Ensemble was formed in 2001 as a trio, initially under the name Emma Salokoski Trio , which at first only played Bossa Nova classics. The band slowly expanded into the Emma Salokoski Ensemble when the pianist Tuomo Prättälä and the drummer, who specializes in Brazilian rhythms, Marko Timonen, joined them. In addition to the aforementioned, the band also includes Mikko Kosonen (guitar) and Lauri Porra ( bass ).

In 2003 the first EP Puutarhassa ( Eng . In the garden ) by the band Emma Salokoski Trio was released. After that, the band focused on Finnish-language material but was still influenced by Brazilian rhythms. In 2005 Emma Salokoski Ensemble released her first Finnish-language album Kaksi mannerta ( Two Continents ). The album reached fourth place in the official album charts in Finland and won a gold record in 2008 (over 10,000 albums sold in Finland). The album consists of Finnish translations and cover versions that have never been heard before . The song on the album that was most played on the radio was the Finnish version of the song Porque te vas ( Why do you go - fin. Miksi sä meet ) from the film Breed Raven . In autumn 2008 the band released their second album Veden alla ( Under Water ).

Emma Salokoski has also worked with other bands and jazz musicians. They include the Don Johnson Big Band , Husky Rescue , Tuomo , Sami Saari , Jukka Perko , Severi Pyysalo and Sakari Kukko .

Quintessence

Salokoski is also a member of the band Quintessence, founded in 1999 . She released her first single, White Light , in 2001 , and the following year Texicalli Records released her debut album, Talk Less Listen More . In 2004 the group's second album 5am ​​followed

Emma Salokoski & Ilmiliekki Quartet

Ilmiliekki Quartet is a Finnish jazz band that was founded in January 2002. In 2009 the Ilmiliekki Quartet released a Swedish-language album Vi sålde våra hemman ( Eng . We sold our houses ) together with the singer Emma Salokoski . The album was on the official Finnish album chart list for three weeks and made it to number 12. In addition to Finland, the Ilmiliekki Quartet has also performed in other European countries, the USA , Canada , Australia and New Zealand as well as Morocco .

Don Johnson Big Band

Don Johnson Big Band is a Finnish hip hop band whose music is influenced by jazz and other genres. The name of the band goes back to the actor Don Johnson from the series Miami Vice . The band has also performed abroad, including in China and at the world's largest music fair Midem in Cannes (2006) as a representative of Finland.

Typical of their appearances are various guest appearances, such as by Emma Salokoski and beatboxer Felix Zenger .
