Vladimír Kostka

Vladimír Kostka (born August 20, 1922 in Třebíč , Czechoslovakia , † September 18, 2009 in Prague ) was a Czech ice hockey player and coach who led the Czechoslovak national ice hockey team to the gold medal at the 1972 World Cup . His son Vladimír Kostka junior completed twelve seasons for Sparta Prague and Dukla Jihlava and took part in the 1975 World Cup.

Career

Vladimír Kostka played between 1938 and 1954 in the top division of Czechoslovakia, the 1st division , for SK Sokol Konice, VŠ Brno, Moravia Slavia Brno, Baník Ostrava and VŠ Prague. Then he began his coaching career, which led him to the head coach of the Czechoslovak national team. In addition to this activity, he completed a sports degree and acquired several academic degrees, including a doctorate and a professorial title .

Kostka was one of the most successful coaches in the Czechoslovak selection, with whom he won two medals at the Winter Olympics and six medals at the world championships. He also won three other medals as assistant coach of the national team.

The highlight of his career was the 1972 World Cup, where he led the team to the world championship title together with assistant coach Jaroslav Pitner in Prague. Thus, four years after the Prague Spring 1968, the team broke the nine-year winning streak of the USSR at world championships. Three years earlier, at the 1969 World Cup , the Czechoslovaks had two wins, 2-0 and 4: 3, against the Soviet Union. These two games are among the most emotional games at World Cups during the Cold War , as the Czechoslovak national players refused to shake hands with the Soviets after both games and had partially covered the red star on their jerseys.

The successes against the Soviet Union were also made possible by a new tactic invented by Vladimír Kostka: the wrong wing . In the case of opposing attacks, one of the two wingers was converted into an additional defender in order to be able to repel the attacks better.

After the end of his coaching career, Kostka was President of the Czechoslovak Ice Hockey Association between 1980 and 1988 . He was also a member of the IIHF's coaching committee for many years .

Vladimír Kostka is the author of several books that deal with the tactics and history of ice hockey.

1997 Kostka was in the category functionary of Fame IIHF Hall of added. He is also a member of the Czech Hall of Fame. Kostka died on September 18, 2009 at the age of 87.
