Matti Keinonen (born November 6, 1941 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player and coach who has played for Lukko Rauma , RU-38 Pori , HJK Helsinki , Jokerit Helsinki and TPS Turku during his active career .

Career

Matti Keinonen played in the top Finnish league for Lukko Rauma from 1959 to 1965 . He then worked for RU-38 Pori for two years . He returned to Lukko, where he stayed for three years. From 1970 to 1973 he went on the ice for HJK Helsinki . Then Keinonen played at Jokerit Helsinki until 1975 . His last stop was at TPS Turku from 1977 to 1978 before ending his career as an active player. Keinonen has been voted All-Star of the Finnish Championship five times . His jersey number 7 was banned by Lukko and no longer given to any player.

Keinonen, who played in the position of winger, won two Finnish championships. He also won two silver and two bronze medals. With the Finnish national ice hockey team , he took part in nine world championships and two Olympic Games . At the European Championships in 1962, he won the silver medal with Finland. In total, he came to 196 appearances in the Finnish national team. In 1987, Keinonen was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame . In 2002 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame .

He worked as a trainer at TPS and Lukko, among others. Keinonen won the silver medal again.

The Matti Keinonen trophy , which is awarded annually by the SM-liiga to the player who leads in the plus / minus rating, was named after him in 1995.
