The 1979/80 season of the Vysschaya League was the 34th season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . The Soviet championship title was secured for the 23rd time by CSKA Moscow , while Isstal Izhevsk and Avtomobilist Sverdlovsk were relegated to the second division.

The twelve teams of the Vysschaya League played four times against each opponent in a common main round, making the total number of games per team 44. The team with the highest points became champions, while the bottom of the table was relegated directly to the second division. The teams in places ten and eleven had to compete in the relegation against the second and third in the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

In the relegation, SKA Leningrad was able to secure relegation and Salawat Julajew Ufa rose. Ischstal Ischewsk rose to the second division, in the crystal Saratov also stayed.
