Presidential election in Tunisia 1999

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1999 presidential election in Tunisia took place on October 24, 1999 and was the first general election of a President of the Republic of Tunisia with more than one candidate on the ballot . Nevertheless, the elections were evidently sham , the results of which had little informative value for the actual support of the victorious candidate Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in the population.

Selection of candidates

An amendment to the constitution expanded the circle of possible candidates in these elections, which until then was de facto limited to members of the ruling party Rassemblement constitutionnel démocratique . Now presidents of opposition parties were also allowed to run, provided they had led their party for at least five years and that party had at least one member of parliament. There were also other conditions, for example related to the age of the candidates. The candidates handpicked in this way had no notable supporters in the country. Both candidates who came into question under these circumstances and actually ran for election were close allies of Ben Ali and therefore not a political alternative.
