Elected to the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia in 1956
The Constituent Assembly election was held in Tunisia on March 25, 1956, five days after independence from France . The election took place in the Kingdom of Tunisia ; because of secret agreements negotiated between Habib Bourguiba of the Neo-Destur party and King Lamine Bey , voters could only vote for party lists and not for individual candidates.
The result was a victory for the National Union , an alliance of Neo-Destur, the General Union of Tunisian Trade Unions , the National Union of Tunisian Peasants and the Tunisian Union of Craftsmen and Traders , which won all 98 seats, while the opposition comprised communists and independents collectively received only 1.3% of the votes; many expressed their opposition by abstaining from voting (41% in Tunis). After the election, Habib Bourguiba was appointed Prime Minister of the Neo-Destur dominated government. The turnout was 83.6%.
