from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neo-Destur party , often short Neo-Destur ( French Néo-Destour ; Arabic الحزب الحر الدستوري الجديد, DMG al-Ḥizb al-ḥurr ad-dustūrī al-ǧadīd ) was a political party in Tunisia .

The party was founded on March 2, 1934 by Habib Bourguiba in protest against members of the Destur party . It came to a split and the foundation of the Neo Destur party from the modernist and secular oriented wing of Destur. The aim of the new party was initially to achieve the independence of Tunisia from the French protectorate power.

The party was oriented towards Arab nationalism . After independence from France in 1956, the party finally came to power in Tunisia. For years the Neo-Destur was the single ruling party within the one-party system of Tunisia.

In October 1964 the party was dissolved and re-established with the Destur Party as the Socialist Destur Party .
