Atelierhaus Pfau (facade)

The listed Pfau studio house at Stephanienstraße 26 in Düsseldorf was built from 1956 to 1958 based on designs by Bernhard Pfau . Pfau used the building as his studio.

description

The five-storey reinforced concrete structure is almost entirely provided with a glazed facade that is divided into six axes. The entrance to the building is on the left. The 4th floor is designed as a stacked floor on the side facing the street and is illuminated there through round windows. The rear of the building is also designed as a six-part glazed facade, with the top floor being flush with the facade. Instead of the originally planned flat roof, the house was given a tile-covered gable roof .

Art historical significance

"The house is an example of Pfau's striving for transparency and lightness in architecture."

The building is also a particular example of the use of glass in architecture:

“A remarkable example of this interpretation of openness [by Hans Schwippert] is Bernhard Pfau's own house at Stephanienstraße 26, designed in 1950. The reinforced concrete structure in the façade is made up of a light-looking steel and glass construction, except for narrow edge strips and the base superimposed. The same principle also applies to the rear of the building, so that here we can speak of maximizing the wall run solution. "
