The 1962/63 season was the 17th season of the Class A as the highest Soviet ice hockey league . The Soviet league title was secured for the tenth time by ZSKA Moscow , while nine teams were relegated to the second division due to a downsizing of the league for the following season.

The 20 teams of class A initially played in a common main round against each opponent once, whereby the total number of games per team was 19. Subsequently, the first ten teams played in the final round for the championship title, while the other ten teams also competed in the two-legged game for relegation, which only the best team of the relegation round achieved. The remaining nine teams in the relegation round were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
