The 1982/83 season of the Vysschaya League was the 37th season of the highest Soviet ice hockey division . The Soviet league title was secured for the 26th time by CSKA Moscow , while Salawat Yulayev Ufa was relegated to the second division.

The twelve teams of the Wysschaja Liga first played four times against each opponent in a common main round, making the total number of games per team 44. The team with the best points became champions. The teams that had occupied the main round in places five to eight played in a further twelve games in a placement round for place five, with the results from the main round being adopted. The teams that had occupied the main round in places nine to twelve completed a further 16 games in a relegation round, with the results from the main round also being adopted. The last placed in the relegation round rose directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
