Vyacheslav Leonidovich "Slava" Voinov ( Russian Вячеслав Леонидович Войнов ; English transcription: Vyacheslav Leonidovich "Slava" Voynov * 15 January 1990 in Chelyabinsk ) is a Russian ice hockey player who last until May 2020 when Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) was under contract and played in the position of defender .

Career

Vyacheslav Voinov began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth division of the HK tractor Chelyabinsk , for whose professional team he made his debut in the Russian Super League in the 2006/07 season . After he had scored a goal in 38 games and prepared three in the following season, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2008 in the second round as a total of 32nd player by the Los Angeles Kings . In the following three seasons he was exclusively for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Manchester Monarchs , on the ice. For this he scored eight goals in 61 games in the 2008/09 season and provided 15 templates.

During the 2011/12 season , the Russian made his debut for the Los Angeles Kings in the National Hockey League and won the prestigious Stanley Cup with them at the end of the season . In the 2012/13 season shortened by the lockout , he played again for the Monarchs in the AHL, before returning to the NHL roster of the Kings after the end of the strike. In the play-offs Woinow scored a total of six goals, becoming the first defender in the Kings jersey to score more than five goals in the final round. In the summer of 2013, his contract in Los Angeles was extended by five years with a rumored salary of 25 million US dollars. At the end of the 2013/14 season , the defensive player was able to win the Stanley Cup again with the Kings and scored a total of 9 scorer points in 26 play-off games.

Domestic violence conviction

In October 2014, Woinow was banned from gaming by the NHL indefinitely after he was arrested by the LAPD for an incident of domestic violence against his wife Marta Varlamowa. According to the public prosecutor's office, the Russian is said to have deliberately attacked his wife and consequently inflicted serious injuries to her face and neck. Woinov's lawyer testified that the injuries were accidentally caused by an accident, and Varlamova also said through her lawyer that her husband had no intention of harming her. On the other hand, one of the police officers involved in the arrest stated that Varlamova testified immediately after the incident that her husband had beaten, strangled and pushed her into a television set in her bedroom during an argument. The judge in charge used these statements as an opportunity to bring criminal charges against Woinow. Varlamowa then wrote an open letter in which she took the blame for the argument with her husband and justified the confusion about her own statements with her poor knowledge of English. In July 2015, Woinow was sentenced to 90 days in prison for domestic violence. In September the contract between him and the Kings was terminated.

Return to Russia

After his release in September 2015, Woinov voluntarily returned to Russia, avoiding deportation by the US authorities. He then trained in the training center of the Russian national team in order to recommend himself for a contract with a KHL team. At the end of October 2015, he finally signed a three-year contract with SKA Saint Petersburg , after they had previously acquired the KHL transfer rights to Woinow from HK Traktor Chelyabinsk. The defender finally spent three seasons there until the summer of 2018 and won the Gagarin Cup with the team in 2017 . After the end of the contract period, Woinow initially remained without a club from summer 2018 and only found a new employer in HK Awangard Omsk in July 2019 . There he played until May 2020.

International

For Russia , Woinow took part in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2007 and 2008 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2007 , 2008 and 2009 . He won a medal every time he participated, and even gold at the 2007 U18 Junior World Championship. He also represented his home country in the 2007 Super Series .

He was also appointed to the Russian squad for the World Cup of Hockey 2016 , in which, however, he was declared ineligible to play due to the conviction and subsequent ban by the NHL. He then took part in the 2018 Winter Olympics with Sbornaja, who started under a neutral flag, and won the gold medal there. He was also named the best defender and voted into the tournament's all-star team.
