Göte Emil Wälitalo (born July 18, 1956 in Kiruna ) is a former Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper and current coach .

Career

Göte Wälitalo began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Kiruna AIF , for whose professional team he was active from 1973 to 1980. With Kiruna, the goalkeeper rose in his rookie year , the 1973/74 season from Division 1 , the highest Swedish division at the time, to the second division Division 2 . From 1975 to 1980 he joined Kiruna in Division 1, which was only second class after the founding of the professional league Elitserien . For the 1980/81 season he moved to Elitserien participant IF Björklöven . With this he won the Swedish championship title in the 1986/87 season . He himself was the goalkeeper with the lowest number of goals conceded in the Elitserien. He had already achieved this in the 1982/83 season . Following the 1989/90 season , the Swede ended his active career at the age of 34.

In 2001, Wälitalo initially worked as an assistant coach for the Swedish U18 youth national team. Since 2005 he has been a goalkeeping coach at his home club IF Björklöven.

International

For Sweden Wälitalo took part in the world championships in 1983 and 1983 . He was also in his country's squad at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo and at the Canada Cup in 1981 and 1984 . At the 1984 Winter Games, he and his team won the bronze medal.
