Augustin "Gustav" Bubník (* 21st November 1928 in Prague , † 18th April 2017 ) was a Czechoslovak ice hockey player and later - trainer . In 1950 he was imprisoned for five years for political reasons.

Athletic career

Gustav Bubník started ice hockey at LTC Prague , the then dominant club in the Czech Republic . From 1948 he was part of the Czechoslovak national team , which won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz and became world champion in 1949 . In 1950 he was the top scorer in the Czechoslovak ice hockey league .

From 1955 Bubník played ice hockey again until 1962, then he worked as a coach for various teams until 1985. In the mid-1960s, he received an offer from EHC Kloten , but was instead sent to Finland to help build Finnish ice hockey. From 1966 to 1969 he was the fourth foreign national coach in Finland .

Trial and detention

In March 1950 the players of the Czechoslovak national team were supposed to travel to London for the ice hockey world championship , but twelve of them were arrested before leaving. In a secret trial, they were charged with espionage and treason for allegedly planning to stay in Britain after the World Cup . All the players except Vladimír Zábrodský , who received a brief suspension, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from eight months to 15 years, which later led to suspicions that Zábrodský had betrayed his team-mates. Bubnik, who was 21 at the time, was also arrested and sentenced to 14 years in prison. After five years he was due to an amnesty released from custody, but suffered all his life to the health consequences of forced labor in the uranium mines of Jáchymov .

From 1998 to 2002 he was a member of the Democratic Citizens Party ( ODS ) in the Czech Parliament . During this time he was a member of the Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sport.

In October 2010 he ran unsuccessfully in constituency 19 (Prague 11) for election to the Senate as an independent candidate for the SNK Evropští democéé .

Miscellaneous

In 2003, Bubník was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Finnish Ice Hockey Association for his services to Finnish ice hockey, and it was not until 2008 that he was accepted into the Hall of Fame of the Czech Ice Hockey Association.
