Lorenz Funk (born March 17, 1947 in Bad Tölz ; † September 29, 2017 in Greiling ) was a German ice hockey player who later worked as an ice hockey manager and coach as well as a sports director. He is a member of the Hall of Fame Germany .
Career
player
Coming from the offspring of SC Reichersbeuern , his playing career began at EC Bad Tölz , with whom he won his first German championship title in 1966 . In 1972 he moved to Berliner SC , with whom he became German champions in 1974 and again in 1976 . In 1982 he moved back to Bavaria to SC Riessersee for the 1982/83 season , before moving back to Berlin to BSC Preussen in the 2nd Bundesliga in 1983 .
In 1986 he officially ended his career in Berlin. In 1988/89 he went on the ice again to play with his two sons Florian “Flocko” and Lorenz Funk in a row in the 2nd Bundesliga 1989/90 at EC Bad Tölz. At the age of 56 he came back for a game at the Berlin Capitals club in the Regionalliga 2002/03.
In total, Funk made 687 Bundesliga appearances over the course of his career. He scored 435 goals and 881 points scorer. In the 1967/68 season he was the league's top scorer.
With the national ice hockey team , for which he played a total of 225 games, he took part in the 1968 and 1972 Winter Olympics. He was also part of the team at the 1976 Winter Games with which he won the bronze medal. He also took part in a total of 13 ice hockey world championships between 1966 and 1979 .
He was awarded the silver bay leaf for his athletic achievements .
Trainer
In 1986 Lorenz Funk took over the coaching position at BSC Preussen Berlin, with whom he was promoted back to the Bundesliga . In 1988 he took over the coaching position at EC Bad Tölz before becoming coach at SV Bayreuth for the 1990/91 season . In 2015, he surprisingly took the coaching position of the district league club ESC Holzkirchen .
Manager / Sports Director
In 1991 he moved to Berlin to join the Eisbären Berlin , where he stayed until 2000. In 2000 he moved to Berlin Capitals : first as a sports director, before taking over the presidency of the club until 2004.
Others
Funk received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon on February 5, 1991 .
He lived with his wife Marlene in Greiling, Upper Bavaria, where he died in September 2017 at the age of 70 of complications from cancer .
