William Robert "Bill" Baker (born November 29, 1956 in Grand Rapids , Minnesota ) is a retired American ice hockey defender . He was a member of the US team at the Miracle on Ice , the United States Olympic victory in 1980. Between 1980 and 1983, he played in the NHL for the Montreal Canadiens , Colorado Rockies , St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers .

Career

In high school, Baker achieved his first successes in ice hockey when he won the Minnesota School Championship for the first time with the East Grand Rapids Pioneers . During his student days, he played four years for the University of Minnesota in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association , where he won two NCAA titles. In the 1976 NHL Amateur Draft , he was drawn in the third round in 54th place by the Montréal Canadiens . He became a national player and took part in the 1979 World Cup. In 1980 he was part of the US team at the Olympic Games in Lake Placid and won the gold medal. In the preliminary round match against Sweden , he equalized to 2-2 a few seconds before the end of the game.

In the 1980/81 season , Baker completed his first game for the Montréal Canadiens in the National Hockey League, but was swapped for the Colorado Rockies shortly thereafter. In 1981 he took part again with the USA in the ice hockey world championship. Shortly after the start of the season, he moved to the St. Louis Blues before he played the 1982/83 season for the New York Rangers. He then spent another year with the Tulsa Oilers in the CHL before retiring from professional sports.

Baker now lives in Brainerd , Minnesota and works as an oral surgeon .
