Ilya Vladimirovich Bjakin ( Russian Илья Владимирович Бякин ; born February 2, 1963 in Sverdlovsk , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and current coach. During his career he played in the National Hockey League for the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks .
Career
Ilya Bjakin was trained at the Spartak Sports School in Sverdlovsk and from 1978 first played for Luch Sverdlovsk , before moving to Junost Sverdlovsk a year later . From 1980 he was active in the junior division of Avtomobilist Sverdlovsk and at the age of 16 reached the championship final with the club's junior team, in which Avtomobilist defeated the team from Chelyabinsk 14-1. In 1983 Bjakin was delegated to the capital to Spartak Moscow , where he played in the following three years and was once Soviet runner-up with the club. In 1986 he returned to Awtomobilist and managed with this 1987 promotion from the second-rate Perwaja League to the top division.
In the 1991/92 season he came to Europe in Switzerland to the then B-League club SC Rapperswil-Jona . In the 1993 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the eleventh round in 267th place. He just spent the 1992/93 season with EV Landshut in the 1st Bundesliga . In 1993 he ventured to North America and played a total of 57 NHL games for the Oilers and the San Jose Sharks . But a year later he went back to Russia. This was followed by two years in Sweden at Malmö IF and one season in the North American International Hockey League . In 1999 he returned to his Russian homeland. His last season 2003/04 he spent at HK Junost Minsk in the Belarusian extra league .
International
Ilya Bjakin took part in two world and one European championships in the junior division. At the U18 European Championships in 1981 he was European champion with the U18 selection of the Soviet Union. At the U20 World Cup in 1982 he was elected to the all-star team of the tournament, at the tournament a year later he won the gold medal, was named best defender and was again elected to the all-star team.
On September 10, 1982 Bjakin made his debut for the Soviet national team in a game against Czechoslovakia. His international career was crowned with a gold medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics . He was then honored with the entire team as the Honored Master of Sports of the USSR .
For the Soviet national team, he scored a total of 21 goals in 109 international matches. At the ice hockey world championships in 1989 and 1990 and he was with the Sbornaja world champion. On May 4, 1991, he played his last international game for the USSR and was then active for the Russian national team , with which he won another gold medal in the 1993 world championships.
As a trainer
Bjakin has been working as a trainer since the end of his career. He found his first job in October 2004 with the THK Tver , which he was head coach until December of the same year. He then moved to HK MWD Twer , for whom he worked as an assistant trainer and junior judge until May 2005.
In the 2005/06 season he was the head coach of CSKA Moscow II , which took part in the Pervaya League . Between June 2007 and October 2008 he coached the Russian second division team PHK Krylja Sowetow Moscow , initially as an assistant coach, from October 2007 as head coach. In 2010 he returned to CSKA Moscow and was employed there as an assistant coach. In May 2011 he was appointed head coach of Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg and fired in late November of the same year.
