The 1998/99 season was the third season of the Superliga . HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk secured the championship title for the first time , while five teams entered the following year as part of a league reduction from 22 to 20 teams with HK Spartak Moscow , Krylya Sovetov Moscow , HK Traktor Chelyabinsk , Chimik Voskressensk and Rubin Tyumen Wysschaja Liga relegated.

Main round

mode

The 22 teams in the Superliga played against each other in a common main round, with each team playing 42 games this season. The 16 best-placed teams eventually qualified for the play-offs in which the champions were played. The six last placed teams in the main round had to play against the six best second division teams in a round trip to stay up in the league, with the four best placed teams in the relegation being allowed to take part in the Superliga game in the following year. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
