Eric Martin Strobel (born June 5, 1958 in Rochester , Minnesota ) is a retired American ice hockey player and Olympic gold medalist.

Life

Strobel grew up in Rochester and graduated from Mayo High School. From 1976 he played for the Golden Gophers at the University of Minnesota and won the NCAA championship in 1979 . In the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft , he was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in round 8 and position 133. However, he never played for the Sabers. After playing a season on the Sabers farm team with the Rochester Americans in the AHL and breaking his leg during the play-offs, he ended his career as a professional ice hockey player and returned to Minnesota.

Strobel achieved particular fame at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games when he managed the Miracle on Ice with the US ice hockey team and surprisingly won the gold medal.

Strobel has two children. In early November 2006 he suffered a stroke.
