John William McCartan (born August 5, 1935 in Saint Paul , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper and coach , who played for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League from 1955 to 1975 . At the 1960 Winter Olympics , he won the gold medal as a member of the US national team.
Career
Jack McCartan began his career as a hockey player at the University of Minnesota , which he attended from 1955 to 1958, while he played parallel for their ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . He then played for a year for Team USA in their Olympic preparation. From 1959 to 1961, the goalkeeper ran in a total of twelve games for the New York Rangers from the National Hockey League . In the 1959/60 season he also ran for the Minneapolis Rangers amateur team and from 1960 to 1962 for the Rangers farm team , the Kitchener-Waterloo Beavers from the Eastern Professional Hockey League . The 1962/63 season he spent with the Los Angeles Blades from the Western Hockey League . The 1963/64 season he spent with the St. Louis Braves from the Central Professional Hockey League . The 1964/65 season he started again with the St. Louis Braves in the CPHL, but returned after only five games to the Los Angeles Blades from the WHL. In the WHL he also played from 1965 to 1967 for the San Francisco Seals , which took up as California Seals from 1966.
The 1967/68 season spent McCartan at the Omaha Knights of the CPhl. In the following four years he played for the San Diego Gulls from the WHL. Most recently he was from 1972 to 1975 regularly for the Minnesota Fighting Saints in the World Hockey Association between the posts. In the 1973/74 season he also completed six games for Minnesota's farm team Suncoast Suns in the Southern Hockey League . In the 1974/75 season , the American was already working as an assistant coach for Minnesota in the WHA. In the same function he acted in the 1976/77 season at Minnesota. In the 1977/78 season he was the head coach of the St. Paul Vulcans from the amateur league United States Hockey League . From 2000 to 2006 he was employed as a scout for the Vancouver Canucks from the NHL. In 1983 he was honored with induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame . In 1998 he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame .
International
For the United States , McCartan took part in the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , where he won the gold medal with his team. He was also voted the tournament's best goalkeeper.
