Craig began his career in 1976 while studying at Boston University. He was drawn in the 4th round of the NHL Amateur Draft in 1977 in 72nd place by the Atlanta Flames , but only played here for one season ( 1979/80 ).

He was the goalkeeper of the US national ice hockey team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics . The USA's 4-3 victory against the then overwhelming Soviet Union went down in sports history as the Miracle on Ice . In the Olympic victory, he kept the team in the game, even though he went down after a body check by Valery Kharlamov and was obviously in pain.

He then moved to the Boston Bruins for the 1980/81 season . It followed two years in lower classes before he returned to the NHL for three games for the Minnesota North Stars for the 1983/84 season .

He was a member of the US national ice hockey team from 1979 to 1983.

From 1994 to 1996 he coached the Northeastern University ice hockey team.

He was honored with the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999 for his services to sport .
