Paul Herbert Johnson (born May 18, 1937 in West St. Paul , Minnesota - † July 17, 2016 ) was an American ice hockey player . At the 1960 Winter Olympics , he won the gold medal as a member of the US national team.
Career
Paul Johnson began his career as an amateur ice hockey player and played for the amateur teams St. Paul Saints, Rochester Mustangs, St. Paul Koppys and Green Bay Bobcats between 1954 and 1960. From 1958 to 1960 he also took part in Team USA's preparation for the Olympic Games. For the 1960/61 season , the winger was committed by the St. Paul Saints from the professional International Hockey League . He spent the following two years with their league rivals Minneapolis Millers . With the Millers he failed in the 1962/63 season only in the playoff final for the Turner Cup at the Fort Wayne Komets . For the 1963/64 season he joined the Waterloo Black Hawks from the United States Hockey League, which was still an amateur league at the time. In the 1964/65 season he went to the Des Moines Oak Leafs from the IHL, with which he was also only subject to the Fort Wayne Komets in the Turner Cup final. With the Oak Leafs he began the following season before returning to the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL, where he was on the ice until his retirement in 1973 at the age of 36. In 2001 he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame .
International
For the USA , Johnson took part in the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley and 1964 in Innsbruck . At the 1960 Winter Games, he and his team won the gold medal. He was also in his country's squad at the 1958 , 1959 and 1961 World Championships .
