Christopher Bowie "Chris" Therien (born December 14, 1971 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played for the Philadelphia Flyers and Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League from 1994 to 2006 . Therien celebrated his greatest career success in the jersey of the Canadian national team by winning the silver medal at the 1994 Winter Olympics .
Career
Therien began his career in 1988 in his native Ottawa with the Ottawa Junior Senators in the Canadian Junior Hockey League . For this he played a few games in the 1988/89 season and also began the 1989/90 season there. The defender found his way into the American college system through the Northwood Huskies high school team , where he played in the US state of New York until the summer of 1990 . The defender, who was selected in the third round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft in 47th place by the Philadelphia Flyers from the National Hockey League , then moved to Providence College . In addition to his studies there, he was also active for the ice hockey team in Hockey East , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , for the next three years . During this time he was appointed to the league's all-rookie team in 1991 and to the second all-star team two years later.
Before joining the franchise the Philadelphia Flyers to Therien completed in autumn 1993 that for the Canadian Hockey Association Hockey Canada on and started preparing for the ice hockey tournament of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway Lillehammer . During the tournament, Therien was used in six of the eight Canadian games. In the final, the Ahornblätter lost to Sweden in a penalty shootout .
After the Winter Olympics ended, the Canadian returned to North America. He went to the end of the 1993/94 season to January 1995 for the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League on the ice before he was included in the Flyers squad at the beginning of the late 1994/95 NHL season . Therien was appointed to the NHL All-Rookie Team at the end of the season and stayed in Philadelphia until March 2004. His best playing year was the 1996/97 season , when he set career records with 22 assists, 24 points and a plus / minus balance of +27. In addition, the Flyers reached the final of the Stanley Cup , in which they were clearly defeated by the Detroit Red Wings . He scored the most goals in the 1995/96 season when he scored six times.
Therien's nine years with the Flyers came to an end on March 8, 2004, when he was given an eight-round vote in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and a third-round vote in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft to the Dallas Stars . For this, the defender played 16 games by the end of the 2003/04 season . Since the following season in the NHL was completely canceled due to the lockout , the Canadian paused a year with ice hockey. In August, the player who had become an unrestricted free agent returned to the Philadelphia Flyers. During the 2005/06 season, however, a head injury forced him to end his career.
