Christian Bäckman (born April 28, 1980 in Alingsås ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player who was last under contract with Frölunda HC from Svenska Hockeyligan until August 2015 .
Career
Christian Bäckman began his career as an ice hockey player in the youth of Västra Frölunda HC , where he was active until 1998. He was then selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as the 24th player of the St. Louis Blues . After the defender initially played four years in the Elitserien for Frölunda, he made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Blues in the 2002/03 season , for which he was on the ice for the following six seasons. The only exception was the 2004/05 season , when the left shooter played during the lockout in his Swedish homeland at his ex-club Frölunda HC, with which he became Swedish champions for the first time in his career . He was also elected to the Swedish All-Star Team and had the best plus / minus balance of all players in the playoffs .
After Bäckman had finished the 2007/08 season with the New York Rangers , he then signed a contract with their league rivals Columbus Blue Jackets , with which he reached the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in franchise history in 2009 , in which he was not used has been. After the season he became a so-called unrestricted free agent and returned to Sweden in October 2009 and signed a five-year contract with his home club, Frölunda HC. There he completed six more seasons before ending his active professional career in summer 2015.
International
For Sweden , Bäckman took part in the U20 Junior World Championships in 1999 and 2000 , as well as the World Championships in 2004 and 2005 . He was also part of Sweden's squad at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , where he and his team were Olympic champions.
