Thomas Mark "Tommy" Williams (born April 17, 1940 in Duluth , Minnesota , † February 8, 1992 in Marlborough , Massachusetts ) was an American ice hockey player . In 1960 he was the youngest player and only later NHL regular player of the US team that became Olympic champion through the "miracle of Squaw Valley " .
Career
Williams played 65 times for the American national team between 1958 and 1960, including all games in the 1959 World Cup , scoring 32 goals and 20 assists. After the Olympic competition in 1960 he turned professional, first with the Kingston Frontenacs , a farm team of the Boston Bruins in the Eastern Professional Hockey League , to make his debut with the Bruins in the NHL after about a year and a half. There he matured in the 1962/63 season to become a regular player and there until the end of the 1960s, before he was transferred to the Minnesota North Stars for the 1969/70 season . In the first season with the North Stars he scored 67 points scorer (15 goals, 52 assists), his best career result, but was given to the worst team in the league, the California Seals , during the following season . When he saw no future there, he moved to the newly founded competition league WHA to the New England Whalers , with whom he won the league's first league title in 1973 . After another season in the WHA, he moved back to the NHL, to the newly formed Washington Capitals and resigned from active sport after two seasons there.
In total, he came to 161 goals and 269 assists in 663 games in the NHL in 16 years.
In 1981 Williams was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame . He died on February 8, 1992 at the age of 51.
