George Mara

George Edward Mara (born December 12, 1921 in Toronto , Ontario , Canada , † August 30, 2006 in Cleveland , Ohio , USA ) was a Canadian ice hockey player . At the Olympic Winter Games in 1948 , he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

George Mara began his career as a hockey player in 1937 at Upper Canada College. Other teams in the junior division were the Toronto Marlboros as well as Toronto Telegram and Toronto Tip Top Tailors from the Toronto Hockey League (TOHL). In the senior sector, he first played for the Toronto Navy military team from the Senior Ontario Hockey League. During World War II , he served as a lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy . In this role he also played for the Halifax Navy team. He also ran for the Toronto Staffords and the University of Toronto Varsitiy Blues until 1947. In 1948 he represented Canada with the RCAF Flyers at the Winter Olympics. After the tournament he was on the ice in two games for the Toronto Barkers from the TOHL. In the 1948/49 season he played seven games for the Montreal Royals in the Quebec Senior Hockey League before ending his career.

Following his ice hockey career, Mara worked as a businessman and owned his own company, through which he sold liquor. He has also been involved in charitable causes for a long time. In August 2006, at the age of 84, he died of complications from a heart operation.

International

For Canada , Mara took part in the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , where he and his team won the gold medal. As team captain, he contributed to this success with 26 scorer points, 17 of which were goals.
