Robert Allan "Bob" Attersley (born August 13, 1933 in Oshawa , Ontario , † March 12, 2010 in Ajax , Ontario) was a Canadian politician and ice hockey player .

Career

Originally from Oshawa, Attersley began his athletic career with the Oshawa Generals . In the 1952/53 season Attersley was the most valuable player in the Ontario Hockey League and won the Red Tilson Trophy as such .

He later played for the Whitby Dunlops for three seasons . During this time, the team won the Allan Cup in 1957 and became world ice hockey champions in 1958 . Winning the Ice Hockey World Championship marked the climax of Attersley's career and greatly contributed to his later popularity. This is based, among other things, on the fact that Attersley scored the winning goal in the final against the USSR at the Jordal Amfi in Oslo .

In 1959, the Whitby Dunlops again won the Allan Cup and thus acquired the right to represent Canada at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley , but they refused. Instead, the Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen represented Canada at these Winter Games. The Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen then offered Attersley to play in their team. Attersley accepted the offer and the team won the silver medal.

Political career and death

After finishing his sporting career, Attersley began to be politically active. He was Mayor of Whitby from 1980 to 1991, the longest term in office in the city's history.

Attersley died after a brief illness on March 12, 2010. His funeral took place on March 17. Among other things, the Canadian Treasury Secretary Jim Flaherty , who was a good friend of Attersley, attended this.
