Daniil Evgenjewitsch "Danny" Markow ( Russian Даниил Евгеньевич Марков ; born July 30, 1976 in Moscow , Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey defender who worked for the Toronto Maple Leafs , Phoenix Coyotes , Carolina Hurricanes , Nashville Predators and Detroit Wings was active in the National Hockey League . In the Continental Hockey League he played for HK Dynamo Moscow , Vitjas Chekhov and, before his NHL career, with HK Spartak Moscow . Most recently he was assistant coach at HK Spartak Moscow.

Career

Markow began his career in 1993 in Russia at HK Spartak Moscow . After his second season he was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the ninth round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft at position 223. He played the entire 1995/96 season for Moscow and also played most of the following in his home country, but moved to the St. John's Maple Leafs , the Toronto farm team in the American Hockey League , before the end of the season .

The 1997/98 season he completed mainly in the AHL, but he also came to his first appearances for Toronto in the National Hockey League . In the following season he was part of the squad of the Toronto Maple Leafs and played for the Leafs until he was given in June 2001 in exchange for Robert Reichel , Travis Green and Craig Mills to the Phoenix Coyotes . His first season in Phoenix was the most successful of his career for him with 36 points in 72 games. He also won the bronze medal with the Russian national team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City .

After his second year in Phoenix, he was transferred to the Carolina Hurricanes in the summer of 2003 , but the Hurricanes gave him in January 2004 in a transfer deal to the Philadelphia Flyers . The 2004/05 NHL season fell due to the lockout and Markov moved to his home country to Vitjas Podolsk .

The lockout was lifted in July 2005 and Markow was transferred from Philadelphia to the Nashville Predators , where he played the 2005/06 season . But due to his frequent injuries, his contract in Nashville was not renewed. The Detroit Red Wings then signed him.

In Detroit he played an important role as defensive defender in 2006/07 and helped the Red Wings move into the final of the Western Conference . However, his contract was not renewed and when he had not signed an NHL club by the end of October, he moved back to his Russian homeland to Dynamo Moscow . There he played for three years before Markow was signed by Vityas Chekhov for the 2010/11 season . In early February 2011, he moved to SKA Saint Petersburg until the end of the season , but returned to Vitjas in August 2011. In January 2012 he was loaned to HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk after Vitjas missed the play-offs. A year later, Markov was surrendered again shortly before the play-offs - this time to HK CSKA Moscow , where he received a contract extension until 2014 in September 2013. However, this contract was terminated in November 2013.

Since October 2016 he has been an assistant coach at his home club Spartak Moscow.
