Steve James Janaszak (* 7. January 1957 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) is a retired American professional ice hockey goaltender , who in his active between 1975 and 1983, including for the Minnesota North Stars and Colorado Rockies in the National Hockey League has played .

Career

Steve Janaszak began his career as a hockey player at Hill-Murray High School. From 1975 to 1979 he attended the University of Minnesota , for whose ice hockey team he played parallel in the National Collegiate Athletic Association . With the team he won the NCAA championship in 1976 and 1979. In his senior year of college, the goalkeeper was also elected to the NCAA's All-Tournament Team and most valuable player in the final tournament. After completing his studies, he joined Team USA in their Olympic preparation and completed a total of 17 test matches during this period. In the further course of the 1979/80 season he also played professional ice hockey four times for the Baltimore Clippers from the Eastern Hockey League and once each for the Tulsa Oilers and Oklahoma City Stars from the Central Hockey League and the Minnesota North Stars from the National Hockey League .

Janaszak spent most of the 1980/81 season with the Fort Wayne Komets from the International Hockey League . There he was able to convince and received the Ken McKenzie Trophy as the best American rookie in the league. Shortly before the end of the season, however, he returned to the CHL, where he stood between the posts for the Fort Worth Texans in the following year and a half . He also played two more NHL games in the 1981/82 season , this time for the Colorado Rockies , but could not convince. In the 1982/83 season , the American played for the Wichita Wind from the CHL. He then ended his career at the age of 26.

International

For the USA Janaszak took part in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . At the so-called Miracle on Ice , he and his team won the gold medal as a substitute goalkeeper without a commitment. He also ran for his home country at the 1982 World Cup , where he played three games.
