Wally Monson

Walter George "Wally" Monson (born November 29, 1908 in Winnipeg , Manitoba , † January 9, 1988 ibid) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach . At the Olympic Winter Games in 1932 , he won the gold medal as a member of the Canadian national team.

Career

Wally Monson began his career as a hockey player with the Elmwood Millionaires. In the 1930/31 season he played for the Selkirk Fishermen. There the striker was able to convince as a goal scorer, whereupon he took part in the 1932 Winter Olympics with the Winnipeg Hockey Club. After the tournament he returned to the Selkirk Fishermen for a year. He later also ran for the St. John Beavers in the Maritime Hockey League and for the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets from the Eastern Amateur Hockey League.

From 1936 to 1940 Monson played in Great Britain for the Harringay Racers from the English National League . In the four years he scored 56 goals and 86 assists for Harringay in official competitions. He later also worked as an assistant coach for the British. After the Second World War , he returned to his Canadian homeland, where he was head coach of the Canadian Ukrainian Athletic Club Blues and the Winnipeg Monarchs from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. With the Monarchs he won the Memorial Cup as a coach in 1946 . In 1955, the Canadian was inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame .

International

For Canada , Monson took part in the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , where he won the gold medal with his team.
